Call the credit bureaus to place a credit freeze. The credit bureaus will ask you for some personal information, and once the freeze is in place, you’ll get a PIN or password to use if you ever want to lift it. A credit freeze is a way to lock your credit report so no one can open new accounts in your name. You’ll need to unfreeze your credit before applying for credit. Call the fraud departments at Experian 1-888-397-3742, Equifax 1-800-525-6285 and TransUnion 1-800-680-7289.
